Poor injection and sharps waste disposal practices for preventative and curative services unnecessarily expose patients, health care providers, and communities to HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. The World Health Organization estimates that each year around the world, more than 25 million people are infected with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C through unsafe and reused needles.
JSI’s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) Project works to empower 11 countries in Africa and the Caribbean to improve injection safety and reduce medical transmission of bloodborne diseases such as HIV. JSI’s country teams also work with local governments to build sustainable programs in each country that establish and implement national plans for safe disposal of medical waste associated with injections.

To support the strategic vision and objectives of the project, MMIS works with in-country, regional, and global partners to systematize approaches, build capacity, and sustain injection safety programs. Find out how MMIS uses partnerships to work towards sustainability.
